Samsung IFA 2012

Riding high on the wave of the Galaxy S III’s success, the Sammy guys were obviously brimming with confidence, and rightly so. The unveilings that came forth from the corporation at IFA 2012 hint at exciting times ahead for the manufacturer, and jumping on the Windows 8 bandwagon maybe the move that will have Apple getting a little worried. Here’s the Samsung highlights from the show…

Samsung Galaxy Note II

After much speculation Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 finally landed at IFA, showing off its resplendent 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD display, with a resolution of 1280 x 720. Taking some design cues from the Galaxy S III, the new handset looks the business with rounded edges and a glossy casing. The Note II is not just a pretty face, it’s a speed demon too, with a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor and 2GB RAM under the hood promising nippiness to the highest degree.

It also runs Android Jelly Bean, and has a new S-Pen stylus (with a rubber nib, supposedly making for a more realistic pen-to-paper experience). It has to be said this mammoth mobile sounds pretty awesome, and with the massive popularity enjoyed by the original Galaxy Note it’s likely that this successor shall prosper too.

Samsung ATIV S and ATIV Tab

Samsung must be delighted it managed to trump Nokia by launching the first Windows Phone 8 handset, the Samsung ATIV S. Featuring a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display and 1.5GHz dual-core processor, the ATIV S is a bit of a looker with its sleek all-metal casing. On board is an 8 megapixel snapper with an LED flash and autofocus, and there’s a handy a 1.9-megapixel camera on the front for video calling. The handset is due to be released later on this year, and it will be interesting to see what kind of reception it receives and how it stacks up against the Galaxy S III and Note 2.

The Koreans also unleashed Samsung ATIV Tab, said to been designed to offer users a “Windows 8 PC experience on a tablet” and provide alternative to Sammy’s Android Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Samsung Galaxy Camera

One bit of Sammy kit that can’t be left off this list is the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Camera. With a humongous a 21x optical zoom and 16 megapixel sensor, the camera has the ability to run Android apps as well as being an awesome snapper. Amalgamating the cream of the Samsung Galaxy smartphone crop with the Korean’s best cameras in the one device must have been no easy feat, and if it delivers the goods it could be a bit of a game-changer.

With these bits of technological greatness announced by Samsung, it’s likely that Apple might just be looking over its shoulder just a little bit more. But only time will tell who will come out on top, and whether all the Windows 8 tinged tech will prove to be a hit or miss with Sammy fans.
